  • Styrofoam Densifier Helps Handle an Unwanted Holiday Leftover

After the gifts have been opened and the holidays are gone, Frisco residents annually are left with a nagging question:

What do you do with the Styrofoam?

One solution: If you can’t completely solve a problem, minimize it.

That’s what is happening at Frisco Environmental Services, where Manager Jeremy Starritt came up with a creative way to make the best of a bad situation.

How to Make Lunch More Eco-Friendly? It’s in the Bag!

The world is exploding with trash, and you can trace it to at least one source: Your lunch bag.

What’s in there? A couple ziploc plastic baggies? Some prepackaged snacks in little plastic containers? Cracker trays with their own throwaway plastic knives? Disposable fruit cups? Aluminum foil wrap? It’s all destined for the trash bin at the end of the day. That’s a lot of mining, oil refining and industrial processes devoted to stuff that’s used for about 12 hours.

This school year make the switch to a completely reuseable, eco-friendly lunch array. You’ll reduce the trash you’re spewing, teach your children better ways and de-toxify their lunches.

Build Your Own Barrel to Collect Those Spring Rains

    By Laura Gorecki

One of my personal goals is to always look for more ways to “Be Green”. I plan to expand my home gardening this year and I had been considering buying a rain barrel for my yard. I was surprised to find out commercial models can cost as much as $150 or more for a one-barrel system.

After reading an instruction sheet on the Internet on how to make a rain barrel at home, I decided to give it a shot. I had a large garbage can in the garage that we were not using, and I thought it would do the trick.

‘Chunk Your Junk’ Event Draws Another Big Turnout

Frisco residents took advantage of a sunny Saturday morning to dispose of unwanted cardboard, Styrofoam, medications, furniture and electronics and more at the quarterly “Chunk Your Junk,” sponsored by Frisco Environmental Services.

A line began to take shape outside FES about 7 a.m., an hour before the gates were scheduled to open. A steady stream of cars, trucks, vans and SUVs wound their way through various recycling and disposal stations the rest of the morning.
